What to Wear for Family Photos | Dads

The most common questions all family photographers get from clients is what to wear for family photos. As a newborn and family photographer based in Roswell, Georgia, I’ve learned tips and tricks for how to select outfits that will photograph well and coordinate easily with the whole family.

In this blog post I’m sharing tips on how to select outfits for dads to wear for family photos. I’ve pulled some great examples of looks with direct links to shop online! I’m also including my favorite places to shop for Dad so you can easily source family photo outfits for any season.

The Color Scheme

My style of photography is known for a classic, bright and airy look with a focus on the relationship between the family. The goal is to produce photos that are beautiful and timeless, and to stay away from anything too trendy! Luckily most men’s clothing doesn’t change too much through the years. When it comes to color scheme I advise clients to stick to light colored neutrals and soft blues. You can stick with solids or select a shirt with a pattern such as plaid. This is the easiest way to coordinate the entire family without agonizing over colors! Also, chances are that your husband already has some options in his closet that he can wear for a session!

The Shirt

When it comes to the style of the shirt, you should avoid t-shirts or anything with writing or imagery. I recommend opting for long or short sleeve button-down shirts with a collar. Another great option is a henley, these shirts don’t have a collar but usually have about three buttons at the neck. This look provides a more casual and relaxed feel. If your family photos are in the cooler months, you can also select a pullover or quarter zip. It’s a nice touch to have a collared shirt under pullovers!

The Pants

The most important part of selecting pants is a good fit. I advise avoiding anything too baggy and selecting something more tailored. Slacks and khakis in tones of tan, grey, or blue are always a good choice. Dads can also elect to wear jeans, but I caution you to make sure his shirt is nice to provide a good balance to your overall look! If mom is wearing a dress, you don’t want dad to look too casual. Bonus tip: please make sure pockets are empty before we begin taking portraits!

The Shoes

For outdoor photos, stick to close toed shoes that aren’t athletic shoes. Some great options are loafers, boots, or dress shoes. The exception to this would be indoor newborn photos or portraits taken on the beach. In these two scenarios bare feet work well!
