Newborn photography is a special moment for families, and I aim to make it a stress-free and simple experience that families truly enjoy. As a family and newborn photographer serving Atlanta and surrounding areas, I’ve gathered plenty of tips and suggestions to help families when preparing for their studio newborn portrait session. From scheduling the session to when you should feed your baby, I’ve got you covered!
Many photographers try to urge parents to schedule their newborn sessions during the first two weeks after the baby is born. However, from my personal experience, I have found that this pressure causes unneeded stress for mamas by urging sessions to be scheduled sooner than they would prefer. Families need time to adjust to all the new lifestyle changes from feedings, adjustment time with older siblings, establishing a routine etc. I suggest families schedule thier newborn session sometime within the first month. If they are ready a few weeks after their baby is born that’s wonderful & if not, waiting is perfectly fine too!
I provide all newborn swaddles, blankets, & even bows made just for newborns. I do prefer to use swaddles from my very own collection- with my experience working with tiny little babies, I know the fabric types and sizes that will work best for swaddling.
Please let me know if you have any heirloom items such as monogrammed bloomers, heirloom outfits, special blankets, etc. that you’d like to have documented. Those precious items are so dear and I love incorporating the special keepsakes to make your session special to your family!
I always ask that you feed your baby 30 minutes before the session starts, or if you have hair & makeup scheduled you can feed the baby during this time. Our goal is for your sweet baby to have a full belly & ready for a long nap. It is very common for babies to want at least one feeding during the session, if not two. So, be prepared to nurse/bottle feed a time or two during your session.
Once you arrive, we will start by swaddling the baby. This gets them ready for sleep & is the perfect opportunity to show off their tiny hands and feet.
I always start newborn sessions with newbonr + older siblings first, then whole family, portraits with baby (and siblings) with each parent, newborn portraits with parents, then individual newborn portraits at the very end. Baby will always be in natural positions and safe, without any complicated posing.
I know how hard those first few weeks and months are with a new baby, so I always try to make this experience as easy as possible for Mamas.
After your session, I will deliver your gallery up to three weeks from our session day. Once you receive your digital images, you can order luxe print products & albums directly through your gallery, or I’m happy to help with the ordering process. Products ordered through your gallery will be delivered right to your front door!
I know how easy it is to get caught up in the day-to-day life with an infant and forget to print your photos, which is why I highly recommend printing images and starting the process of a custom album within the first few weeks of receiving images. I will happily guide you through the experience!
If you’re ready to start preparing for your studio newborn portrait session and would like to reserve your due date on my schedule, INQUIRE HERE to start the process! I take a limited number of four due dates each month to make sure my schedule is flexible enough to accommodate each session. For that reason, I recommend reaching out at the beginning of your second trimester.
