As a photographer for Alpharetta families, I’ve had the pleasure of documenting many beautiful moments and seasons of life for parents and their children. One of my favorite types of sessions is creating timeless newborn photos for parents to treasure.
Of course, newborn babies are so sweet. But there’s something about capturing those fleeting moments at home when a baby is brand new and snuggled up in their nursery that’s so special to me.
Here are my secrets for capturing timeless newborn photos at home, featuring images from the wonderful Ogle family. They’re a favorite family client of mine. And through my Membership, are enjoying four full milestone sessions as their family grows. And, they’ll get a fine art album to document all their sessions!
Before COVID, there was a time when I’d welcome newborns and their families into my home studio for their newborn sessions. While those sessions were such a joy, COVID somewhat forced me to exclusively do in-home newborn sessions. And you know what? I absolutely love it.
I know first-hand that when you have a brand new baby at home, those first weeks are a lot for parents. Getting out of the house can be a production!
Think about all the things parents need to plan for if they take their baby to a newborn session away from home:
With in-home sessions, Alpharetta families can skip all the logistics of getting out and going to a studio for photos. Instead, they enjoy it all from the comfort of their homes. There’s no worry about what to pack, when to leave, or dealing with the hustle and bustle of getting everyone out the door.
For the Ogle family, an in-home session was the perfect way to document the newborn days with their angelic girl, Evelyn. They had driven all the way to my studio from Acworth for their maternity session. While it was worth the trip for their stunning maternity photos, with a newborn, it was wonderful to photograph Evelyn in the comfort of their home. No packing, traveling, or planning for time on the road with their baby.
Preparing your newborn’s nursery is a magical time for Alpharetta families. Setting up your baby’s room and filling it with meaningful items is much more than decorating. It’s creating a charming space where your family will spend many memorable moments.
While visiting the Ogle for Evelyn’s newborn photos, I was able to truly capture all the details of the lovely nursery her parents had been thoughtfully preparing for months before her arrival.
In Evelyn’s nursery, there was a delicate gold dangle bracelet gifted to her by a family member.
Pictures of her parents as children and maternity photos of Morgan (her mother) at the farm were also displayed. Baby girl is surrounded with faces of people who love her.
Handmade, heirloom dresses made by Evelyn’s grandmother hung and were featured in many photos. It was an especially meaningful session.
There is no way that I could have captured all of these memorable details if the session would have been held in a studio. When I visit a family in their home for a newborn session, I’m able to incorporate all of the meaningful family sentiments and symbols.
Parents of newborns have so much to do and keep track of. That’s why I prioritize simplifying newborn sessions for them and making it easy.
To start, I send my Alpharetta families with newborns a checklist of what to expect at your session and how to get your baby ready. It’s simple and helps you go into the day of your newborn session feeling completely calm and comfortable.
I can’t stress enough that parents don’t have to clean in anticipation of your in-home newborn session! I move things around when I need to capture a special space or part of your home. You don’t need to worry at all about getting things organized for me.
What might be parents’ favorite aspect of having me document their newborn session is that I provide absolutely everything needed to dress your family for photos. My clients have full access to my exclusive wardrobe, so you don’t have to worry about finding, trying on, or returning outfits.
I have Beaufort Bonnet bow swaddles available for newborn sessions, plenty of soft color wraps, and a beautiful Moses basket we can use to safely lay your baby. The basket is perfect for having pets come over to sniff their new little human or have siblings peek into, all while keeping the baby safe and secret.
One word of caution: If you’re wondering how to create that funny newborn photo you saw on Pinterest with the silly prop, I’d suggest you give it some thought. Sure, that photo might be funny to look at now, but will you want to hang it up 20 years from now? The most timeless newborn photos tend to be the simplest, so my advice to clients is to skip the props.
